The Village Câmara de Lobos
Lobos marinhos, monk seals that used to cavort in the bay of Câmara de Lobos at the time of the discovery of Madeira, were the inspiration for the name of the second largest village on the island, which was built between two rocky cliffs. Today, however, hardly any monk seals are seen along this stretch of coast. If you want to spend a quiet holiday, this is the place for you. The picturesque fishing village with its romantic harbour and colourful fishing boats exudes serenity. Even British Prime Minister Winston Churchill felt at home here and immortalised the village in many of his pictures.
The village reflects Madeira's traditions in an authentic way. In addition to fishing and traditional boat building, one of the best wine-growing areas on the island is located above the village. The inhabitants are open-minded and hospitable. A stroll through the fishing quarter with its pubs and bars is absolutely worthwhile. This is where the legendary "Poncha" was created, a drink made from freshly squeezed lemon juice, honey and sugar cane schnapps, which is easily underestimated in its effect.
