The island of Madeira has a very subtropical, mild and balanced climate all year round. The average maximum temperatures are 19 degrees in winter and around 25 degrees in summer in August. Daytime temperatures also hardly fluctuate by more than three to five degrees. Due to its location in the Atlantic Ocean combined with the Gulf Stream, extreme temperatures hardly ever occur. Madeira is also known to have individual climate zones on the island. The mountain ridge in the middle of the island creates a weather divide. Therefore, the rain-laden clouds of the north-east trade wind remain in the mountains, so that in Funchal and on the south-western coast there is more frequent and more sunshine.
