Ponta do Sol, as the name suggests, is the municipality in Madeira that statistically has the highest number of hours of sunshine, which has a positive effect on the air and water temperatures, which are always slightly above average here. In fact, however, the place owes its name to the rocky peaks that shine in the evening sun.
The location of the village is perfect: in a gorge, directly on the south coast between Calheta (sandy beach) and Ribeira Brava (junction to the north coast). The municipality has built wave barriers in the bay so that nothing stands in the way of a pleasant, calm bathing experience. The region is very fertile, as can be seen from the many banana plantations and sugar cane fields.
