The city of Seixal
Seixal is a Portuguese municipality (freguesia) in the district of Porto Moniz. It is home to around 600 inhabitants. The place name comes from the Portuguese word "seixo" or "seiço", which refers to a shrub from the willow family (Salicaceae) that is common in the north of Madeira. Seixal was founded in 1533. For a long time, the town, whose inhabitants lived from agriculture and fishing, was very isolated and only accessible by sea. It was not until the 17th century that Seixal grew, as better boats became available, and in the 18th century it reached its highest population of around 3,500 people. One of the most striking buildings in the town is the church of Santo Antão from 1553. Seixal is also known for its black sand beach "Praia do Porto de Seixal". There are also natural swimming pools ("Poças das Lesmas") on the coast between volcanic rocks. A gastronomic speciality of the village is trout, which is common in the waters around Seixal and is farmed in Chão da Ribeira not far from Seixal. On the road from Seixal to São Vicente, the viewpoint "Miradouro do Véu da Noiva" offers an impressive view, including of the waterfall "Cascata do Véu da Noiva", which pours out of a rock face directly into the sea.
